“If your parachute does not open, you get your money back”, read a sign as I walked past it on the way to board a plane. I was all set to skydive! The folks in New Zealand have a unique sense of humor as they laugh at you and with you at the same time!
As I jumped off the plane the first reaction was of complete incomprehension. The jump from 15000ft was meant to be the high point of our New Zealand holiday. Instead, the free fall of 7000ft that lasted only a few really long seconds had me asking myself if I had lost my head!! The unbelievable cocktail of pure adrenaline and terror left me in a state of daze until I noticed the tug of the parachute chord which suddenly had me floating like a graceful bird high up in the sky. The wonderful New Zealand countryside left me breathless as I noticed the many picture perfect lakes that dotted the gorgeous landscape set in the backdrop of languorously rolling hills.
The tandem dive (I was hooked up with an instructor) came to a graceful touch down just when I had started enjoying the floating feeling. To my utter relief my wife touched down shortly after! Was it not awesome asked the instructor? I nodded vigorously like a mad man not knowing how to react to this incredible experience.
I got a nicely framed certificate celebrating my dive that serves as a reminder that adventure sport is not everyone’s cup of tea! I was recently invited to skydive again over The Palm in Dubai. I responded with a smug expression that I have had my fill of it. Behind my confident alpha male exterior was an absolute chicken! Sometimes one has to just scratch the surface for the real truth!
Do I recommend skydiving? From experience I can confidently say that it’s a once in a lifetime experience😄
